Dr Elizabeth Spellacy, Nicola Ward (Clinical Specialty Nurse and WBOP Fracture Prevention Coordinator) and Pauline McQuoid (Clinical Pharmacist and pathway group member) were our speakers.
The presentation covered the Fragility Fracture pathway, DEXA scan access for GPs, the Fracture Prevention Service (currently only in the WBOP) and treatment options.
A link to the education handout can be found here.
In the WBOP, fragility fracture patients are offered the option of having an education session on osteoporosis medicines by Pauline McQuoid. Some of you will be familiar with Pauline through her role in the Medwise Service. If the patient is subsequently prescribed a bisphosphonate, Pauline provides ongoing adherence support and follow-up, recognising that adherence with bisphosphonates is poor and adversely affects clinical outcomes. Pauline has also offered to provide in-service education and/or review Zoledronic Acid protocols for Practices if anyone is interested.
In the EBOP Pauline is available to offer individual advice to GPs with regard to the management of fragility fractures.
Pauline can be contacted on 021 864 996.
