A couple of weeks ago I was at a farewell lunch for Lynne Hansen and Val Scott, two nurses who have been with the DHB for a very long time. Both were active members of the NZNO JAG (Joint Action Group) a collaboration between NZNO and BOPDHB.
A couple of weeks ago I was at a farewell lunch for Lynne Hansen and Val Scott, two nurses who have been with the DHB for a very long time. Both were active members of the NZNO JAG (Joint Action Group) a collaboration between NZNO and BOPDHB.
Val worked in the organisation for 28 years and is known to many as an enrolled nurse on night shift on ward 1D, and in recent years on ward 3C. Val first became an NZNO delegate while training at Cook Hospital in Gisborne in 1972. She became a member of the student nurses association and progressively got more interested in fairness in the workplace, both professionally and industrially.
Lynne Hansen came to Tauranga from Wellington Hospital where she specialised in Orthopaedics and Emergency nursing. With young children Lynne started as a casual nurse working nights, all that we had to offer at that time. She quickly went from two nights a week to Night Supervisor, and then was Night Duty Manager for 28 years, with a total of 38 years’ service.
I was reflecting on the huge contribution both Val and Lynne have made over their many years of service. They both have been key players in the development of the strong partnership between the DHB and NZNO. This has resulted in improved services for our communities, through initiatives like “Releasing Time to Care”.
Our relationships with all our unions are very important to us.
I was also thinking about the thousands of patients and families Lynne and Val have cared for. The doctors they worked with, the student nurses they mentored. Both have a huge amount to be proud of.
Whilst I have a clinical background, my clinical experience was over a relatively short period of time. I have a deep respect for all of our clinicians who provide direct patient care each day. Our doctors, nurses and allied health teams.
One of the great features of BOPDHB is our Cluster Leadership model where our doctors and nurses work in partnership with a business leader to shape the services we provide to our communities. This model of clinician-led care has served us well, and I was delighted when the Director of Allied Health was appointed to the Executive Team in 2014, sitting alongside the Director of Nursing and the Medical Director. Strong clinical leadership and care delivered in multidisciplinary teams will serve our patients and our communities well.
