Delayed referral to hospital of young woman with diabetes
The Health and Disability Commissioner Anthony Hill has today released a report finding a general practitioner (GP) in breach of the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights for the care provided to a young woman diagnosed with diabetes.
The woman complained to the GP of an unintentional weight loss of 30 kilograms and of being thirsty and tired. The GP made a diagnosis of diabetes after finding the woman’s blood glucose level was 34mmol/L (normal being 4.0 to 5.9mmol/L).
