Reminder: Depo-provera use for contraception: review two yearly; discuss risks including osteoporosis and meningioma
A recent case control study (1) found a higher relative risk of meningioma in users of depot provera vs non-users (odds ratio 5.5). Meningioma is uncommon, any absolute risk increase is likely to be small. For more information see FSRH response to study: Use of progestogens and the risk of intracranial meningioma (2024) FSRH.
The NZ Formulary medroxyprogesterone acetate monograph has been updated with meningioma added to cautions and adverse effects sections. https://nzf.org.nz/nzf_10051
Our sexual health specialist colleagues would like to remind prescribers use of Depo-Provera for contraception should be reviewed by an appropriate practitioner every two years, to discuss with the woman the risk of osteoporosis and meningioma and consider alternative options.
