General Surgical Referrals

This is a polite reminder to referrers that referrals being sent to the DHB should be addressed to the appropriate department via the referral centre, and not directly to an individual Senior Medical Officer (SMO)

This is a polite reminder to referrers that referrals being sent to the DHB should be addressed to the appropriate department via the referral centre, and not directly to an individual Senior Medical Officer (SMO). All referrals undergo a grading process by one or more of the SMOs in the department and then are allocated to the most appropriate consultant.

If referrals are addressed to an individual this can lead to delays for the patient if the particular SMO is away on leave. It is helpful to let the department know if the patient has been under the care of a particular consultant in the past. This information will then be taken into account when allocating the case to an SMO but other facts such as an even distribution of workload, leave and waiting times will also be taken into account.

If you have any questions regarding this please do get in touch.
