In response to requests that have been coming in since the introduction of eReferrals, radiology eReferrals will be live on the Midland eReferral portal run by BPAC from Wednesday 1st July.

As well providing electronic referrals, this change also improves community access to radiology, for example providingdirect access to CT when certain clinician criteria are met. This work has been developed using the Bay Navigator process of bringing primary and secondary clinicians together, working in collaboration. It is hoped that improved GP access to diagnostics will support providing patient care in the community.

The forms have been built to support clinician decision making in that they show the minimum access criteria in the form. The minimum access criteria have been agreed across the Midland Region and are based on a national initiative.

No doubt it will take a little while to get used to the new system but it is hoped that the system will be both safer for patients, with fewer referrals being lost, and quicker for clinicians to use.

Basic instructions on how to use the forms can be found here.

Please look for more detailed instructions which will be coming from your PHO, which outline changes in the way that breast imaging referrals are handled.

If you have any questions regarding the new referral system please contact your PHO or joe.bourne@bopdhb.govt.nz
