There has been an announcement from Pathlab regarding the introduction of routine testing of HbA1c at the 1st Antenatal screen in the BOP and Waikato.
This is following the 2014 MoH ‘Guideline on Screening, Diagnosis and Management of Gestational Diabetes in New Zealand.’
Key points to note are :
- The test should now be included in the initial 1st Antenatal screen so please make sure your practice system has updated this and those requesting the test are aware, including practice nurses.
- Aim to avoid duplication of testing by checking with the patient that the midwife hasn’t already requested the HbA1c.
