There has been an announcement from Pathlab regarding the introduction of routine testing of HbA1c at the 1^st Antenatal screen in the BOP and Waikato.

There has been an announcement from Pathlab regarding the introduction of routine testing of HbA1c at the 1^st Antenatal screen in the BOP and Waikato.

This is following the 2014 MoH ‘Guideline on Screening, Diagnosis and Management of Gestational Diabetes in New Zealand.’

Key points to note are :

• The test should now be included in the initial 1^st Antenatal screen so please make sure your practice system has updated this and those requesting the test are aware, including practice nurses.
• Aim to avoid duplication of testing by checking with the patient that the midwife hasn’t already requested the HbA1c.
