Follow-up of referral and appropriate examinations

Health and Disability Commissioner Anthony Hill today released a report finding a general practitioner (GP) in breach of the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights (the Code) for failures in the services he provided to a man.

The man consulted the GP after he began to have coughing fits, particularly at night. The GP prescribed antibiotics, but a few months later the man returned due to further coughing fits, bleeding from the nose, and episodes of shortness of breath. The GP sent a semi-urgent referral to the local District Health Board’s (DHB) specialist respiratory service.
