Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder - Te Whāriki ā Toi Course 13 Feb 2020
A new course on Te Whāriki ā Toi explores why and how exposure to alcohol and/or tobacco during pregnancy and early childhood (first 1000 days) affects immediate and lifelong health outcomes for the child.
A new course on Te Whāriki ā Toi explores why and how exposure to alcohol and/or tobacco during pregnancy and early childhood (first 1000 days) affects immediate and lifelong health outcomes for the child.
It will help you talk confidently with women about alcohol and tobacco and deliver consistent, clear messages about alcohol and tobacco use in pregnancy.
When you have completed the course, you will be able to:
1. Explain to a person that is pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, why there is no recommended safe level of fetal exposure to tobacco or alcohol.
2. Describe to a person that is pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, how alcohol and tobacco interfere with fetal development, using scientific evidence.
3. Describe to a person that is pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, the scientific evidence around the risks to infants of fetal and neo-natal exposure to alcohol or tobacco.
4. Support women to make long term behaviour changes to improve their health during and after pregnancy to support healthy outcomes for their child.
You will also be able to access great resources if you want to learn more about FASD.
Completing the course will give you 30 minutes professional development time and you can download a certificate as proof of your learning.
If you do not yet have a Te Whāriki ā Toi (previously Midland Learning) account, please complete the attached Online Learning Memorandum of Understanding and send through to online.learning@bopdhb.govt.nz and they will set up accounts for your team members. Each person needs a different email address. Please note. Only one Online Learning MoU is required per organisation. If you are not sure if your organisation has an MoU, just get in touch with the Online Learning team.
