Addressing misinformation in the BOP community, that patients who have not been COVID-19 vaccinated cannot receive treatment at Tauranga and Whakatāne Hospitals

We at BOPDHB have become aware of some misinformation in the Bay of Plenty community, that patients who have not been COVID-19 vaccinated cannot receive treatment at Tauranga and Whakatāne Hospitals, and that GPs are not referring their nonvaccinated patients.
Acting Chief Operating Officer Bronwyn Anstis said this is not correct.

We have developed these dot points for you so that you have the correct information should someone ask you.

  • The BOP DHB will continue to accept referrals for all patients in our region regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status.
    • You can be reassured that all staff involved in  care in the BOPDHB’s Tauranga and Whakatāne Hospitals or other sites  from 15 November at 11.59pm, will have been vaccinated against COVID-19 as mandated by the government’s COVID-19 Vaccination order to protect our population.

  • Patients are not part of this mandate and as such will continue to be supported with their required care by the BOPDHB.

  • If we ask about a patient’s vaccination status, it will be to let them know that we can vaccinate them, if they want it.

  • If a patient is unwell (any symptoms of fever, cough, sore throat, loss of taste or smell) on the day of their appointment, they may be asked to rebook to a time when they are well.

If a patient is unable to attend an appointment or needs to update their contact details, please ask them to call our Patient Information Centre on 0800 333 477.

Ngā mihi

Bronwyn Anstis
Acting Chief Operating Officer BOPDHB
