Need Podiatry for Your Patient?

If you need to check for foot pulses, you can not only refer to the community nurses for ABPI measurement, but also to the podiatry clinic at either Tauranga or Whakatane Hospital.

If you need to check for foot pulses, you can not only refer to the community nurses for ABPI measurement, but also to the podiatry clinic at either Tauranga or Whakatane Hospital.

At the podiatry clinic it takes around 2-3 weeks for an ABPI and if any problems are picked up that need specialist input, the podiatrist will  refer directly to either of the vascular surgeons, Mark Morgan or Phil Thwaite. ABPIs can be done in the Western and Eastern Bay of Plenty, though in the East they will be manual rather than automated.

Unfortunately funding to podiatry has been tight over the years, so there is only one full-time podiatrist working at Tauranga Hospital (Leigh Shaw) and a 0.6 FTE podiatrist working at Whakatane Hospital. They are very happy to receive your referrals, provided they meet the acceptance criteria.
